About The Dip n' Chip
Welcome! I'm Melissa and I'm the Dip n' Chip. When I'm not plugging away here, I'm working as an environmental consultant!
We aren't all born with the desire to eat whatever is in front of us, and not all of us grow up on a variety of ingredients and meals. I for one grew up as a meat and potatoes kind of girl and was a picky eater. Fact - I didn't like perogies until I was 22, sushi until I was 25 and pickles and olives until I was 27. I was also totally that person who used to put ketchup on everything. Shocking when I will eat absolutely anything and everything today, but hey, you have to start somewhere. I started out with learning how to bake as a kid, and was an average cook when I moved out from home. I moved from my hometown, Stoney Creek, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia in 2013 and I'm not sure if I can blame it on the west coast air, but after being surrounded by every cuisine and a world of flavours, my taste buds became obsessed with it all. I always want to try something new, and bring inspiration home. I started this site to share my new found cooking skills and adventures with friends and family to inspire them, but being able to share my food adventures with anyone makes it that much more rewarding. I don't have a niche when it comes to cooking at home. I thought I had to, but realized that when I'll eat absolutely anything and everything, it's kind of difficult....so why bother trying? I think it's more fun to dive into a food adventure where anything goes. I want to share not only recipes I've created, but also those I've come across from various cookbook reads and amazing food bloggers. Here's the best part - when it comes to recipes, I'll keep it short and sweet. I'm not one to write extensively when I know you just want to get down to business. I want cooking to be easy, simple and fun! Food isn't my only obsession. Who loves a well-crafted cocktail? My ever-growing appreciation for alcohol and the complexity that goes into a good drink has me wanting to discover what uniqueness and creativity exists, and be able to share at-home cocktails from my hubby and our favourite bar books or something we've discovered out in the world! Fact - I like to drink my gin like my husband drinks a good glass of scotch, on the rocks. And we're not talking about that cheap Beefeater. Save that for a G&T....okay I no longer even have Beefeater at home. It's not amateur hour when you familiarize yourself with the complex, smooth gins that exist (same goes for all kinds of hard alcohols). Discovering what the world has to offer, whether it be based on traditional roots, a new wildly unique concoction, a beautifully refined plate or something that tells you to 'brace yourself, you're about to get messy!' is what life is all about. The less intimidated you are by trying something new and different, the less you'll miss out on. |
