I'm going to try and make this short and sweet. This is Mom's Grilled Cheese Truck. This is the first food truck I ever had the privilege of going to in Vancouver. Sure, it only took almost a year living in downtown to go to one... they're only everywhere! My friend and I were hanging out for the day and ended up grabbing lunch here. You really can't go wrong with grilled cheese sandwiches. They are my lazy day meal and my hangover meals (when I have some energy to throw it together ad not go up the street for a rice/noodle bowl) and having heard amazing things about this truck, oh man just thinking about it has me wanting another! The price is around $10 for your meal, but before you think "oh that's expensive!", I assure you, the sandwiches are huge, they come with crispy potato chips, you will be left full, and it's the best damn grilled cheese you'll probably ever have! My concoction was the following:
Havarti cheese Sourdough bread Double smoked bacon Banana peppers Buttered crispy sourdough bread is probably my favourite heavenly goodness for sandwich bread, and with it packed with deliciousness, you are a fool to not try this place just once! And though we thought all we got was the sandwich, oh no - there was a nice surprise at the bottom of the wrapper: salty crispy potato chips!! mmmm Though I wouldn't be able to have this often, I would certainly make it a future hangover meal! You may enter food coma, but that's okay! Oh, I almost forgot... if you're like me and always have your grilled cheese with ketchup, yehhh not necessary with these. In fact, it might ruin it hah Check out Mom's Grilled Cheese Truck's menu here! Yum! And maybe you'll look like this when you receive your sandwich:

I swear the further I travel the bigger and better the scones get. I started off my day trip to Skagway with a nice healthy breakfast of yogurt and fruit, only to toss that out the window with this mega bad boy. I made my first stop in Carcross, YT - about an hour or so from Whitehorse. It's a very small town, which is essentially busy with tourists. Myself and the massive tour busses of elderly folk from the USA all crammed into a small place called the Chilkoot Trail Authentic Sourdough Bakery. With cookies and other baked goods the size of your head, a smell that sucks you into the bakery and breakfast items that are to die for, of course I had to buy a $5 strawberry scone. Yes, it was $5, but I think that's justifiable when it's about the size of my thigh and had weight to it! Everything is made first thing in the morning so the yummy freshness is ready to go! The scone had a nice lightly crunchy exterior and buttery soft interior with chunks of fresh strawberries. The sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar added a whole other depth of flavour, and I'm pretty sure somewhere in there I could taste a hint of Maple Syrup. I attempted to only eat half and save the rest for later, but because I have no self control when it comes to sweets I ate the whole thing, and suffered the consequences for about an hour (aka fatigue and upset stomach from sugar overload). Totally worth it! When I finally reached Skagway I decided to grab myself a latte from Glacial Smoothie & Espresso. It's kind of difficult to take a picture of coffee in a cup to go, so let me just say when the barista tells you to get the almond joy latte, you get the almond joy latte. Hopefully it does bring some joy in your life with its creamy goodness with that sweet almond flavour! When you've spent your afternoon walking down Main street checking out all the old shops, history and scenery, you'll be hit with the delicious smell of popcorn. There's a good reason why this place is busy. Not only are they making popcorn by the second, there's multiple flavours they sell from chocolate to garlic and jalapeno to plain Jane popcorn! And who is going to say no to free samples? I definitely went back for seconds as the garlic and jalapeno flavours were my faves. However, the sea salt, cheesy and caramel flavours were darn tootin' good too! Based on what you've read so far, it's safe to assume I've had a pretty good day of sweets! To make up for it, I decided to get fish tacos at Bonanza Bar and Grill. I may have ruined this with the Northern Lights drink I got, which was delicious (vodka, amaretto, sour mix, strawberry, sprite and southern comfort). Maybe I should have gotten the Chuck Norris drink... oh well. Anyways, cod fish tacos. Super delicious! Any fish cooked in Alaska is amazing! Pacific Cod may not be my favourite fish, but they were flakey and juicy in these soft shells! Topped with coleslaw and tomatoes, fresh Pico de Gallo, hot sauce and my share of lime juice, I'm fairly certain it only took me a few minutes to down these, all while making a mess of course! The other meals I saw looked tasty too, so if you feel like pub food, especially crab cake burgers, come here! And don't forget about Chuck Norris!! So as if I didn't have enough goodies today, this my friends was my dinner. I stopped in Carcross again and went to the Caribou Coffee shop, ordered myself a dark roast and piece of biscotti (I love that combo together!). Coffee aside, this is one badass piece of biscotti. Packed with almond slices and chocolate chips, this is probably one of the best pieces of biscotti I've ever had - well, in terms of simplicity my fav is still back in Vancouver, because simple is better. This sweet goody felt like a special treat. I'm not even sure if I should call it biscotti. Now, as amazing as it was, the only downside was that it was so thick and hard I thought I was going to break my jaw (it was sore after eating!). You definitely need two hands to break this baby apart. Kind of reminded me of the jawbreaker. Super tasty, super deadly!
All in all, my trip to Skagway was pretty awesome! And no it's not just because of the great food I had. I love road trips and untouched scenery so the drive was amazing. The small historical town of Skagway was great and of course when there's good grub to go along with, you definitely need to make a stop in one of these places! Hope this just made you hungry, because I am now. Here's a few photos sans food that I equally enjoyed: There are very few people in Vancouver (or I've found anyways) that don't like ramen. I absolutely love it! It's great for a rainy day, a cold day, a comfort food day, an I feel like ramen day! Back in the spring my friend and I decided to go to a place that's practically next door to me, yet I'd never seen it or heard of it. It's on a side street (easy to miss) and is a small joint. Yet, my friend Mandy told me her friend had raved about it and we should go! Sure enough, there was Marutama Ra-Men, in all it's glory! Before I continue, I should note, Mandy and I have been back twice since we first went, which includes last night! That says a lot seeing as I've spent almost all summer in Whitehorse. That little window to the left? Yup, that's our hot spot to socialize and eat! The exterior and interior wooden infrastructure are bamboo-like and with a warm interior and humble staff, you're already sucked in. I chose to wait to write about this as I had to try the vegetarian ramen. I wanted to be able to share this with both crowds. It helps having vegetarian friends as you see and kind of want what they have alongside your dish. The first few times we went, I ordered the Chashu Ramen. It doesn't take much to make this ramen soup delicious! It came with four roast pork filets, which were so tender with a slight chew. Perfectly cooked pork, can't go wrong! The soup also consists of a cloudy fish broth, which gets a nice saltiness from the seaweed served in it. Add some green onions alongside, and with thin, delicious ramen noodles, this dish is stellar! I typically get the spicy broth, but you can get mild. You can always order mild and add cayenne pepper to it. Don't forget to add the roasted garlic flakes. They are amazing!! I pretty much drown my ramen with it! Oh and toasted sesame seeds! Add those too :) So then we speed up to last night and I joined Mandy in going the vegetarian way. We both ordered the Tan Man, which instead of it being a chicken soup, we got vegetable instead. The broth is amazing! It has a light flavour, but is so smooth I could just drink it on its own! This dish is packed with various textured lettuce leaves (the best are the chewy purple ones! - p.s anyone know what that is?), shredded carrots, and green onion. I find that this soup is lighter than the Chashu Ramen, which is more of a filling dish. This one hits the spot nicely.... okay likely because it's sans pork! The vegetable broth can only be ordered "mild," but it's not a big deal as you can add spice to it to heat it up!
Along with the fantastic food, there's a bunch of fantastic people who work there! They are so kind, and whenever they have to apologise for not having something (ex. Not serving tea in the summer), we assure them it's okay, we're regulars and will certainly be returning. Do I expect people to think this is the best place? Maybe not, but it's definitely worth going to and when it's close to home, it becomes the staple joint you just go to! Not many people know about it, so it's never silly busy when we go! mmm Ramen.... just go! |
